Aside from bluffing, check-raising is the most notorious tactic in the world of poker. Apart from giving the game distinct flavor and flair like the aforementioned tactic, check-raising is even more infamous because of the perception of many players, notably the inexperienced ones, towards it. As said earlier, many players, particularly the amateur ones, have a somewhat unfavorable view regarding check-raising. Such players look down on the tactic as something that is blameworthy and only done by those who are everything but honorable and prudent.

First of such factors is the strength of one's hand since the decision to check-raise will be primarily based ion one's hand. Next in the list determining whether someone behind one's position will bet after one checks as not a singe player doing so after one's check will be a grave mistake as it will mean that one has just given everyone at the table a free card. Last of the factors to consider is the position of the probable bettor which is self-explanatory since the bettor's position will be the deciding factor for one's actions that would concern one's plans regarding the tactic of check-raising.
One of the things that one would want when one plans to check-raise with a relatively weak hand is the probable bettor positioned to one's right so as to force players in subsequent turns to double bet thereby furthering the chances of the playing field being thinned out. If one aims to fatten the pot then it is best that the probable bettor be on one's left so that one will be able to raise the bet which would make staying in the game more expensive which in turn would lead into a larger pot.
Check-raising, though having a negative stigma attached to it, is an excellent maneuver to practice as it is no different from the other poker strategies employed in the game that aims to maximize one's wins and minimize one's losses.
