Instructions for Poker: How to Play Texas Hold 'Em

With its top-notch game play and universal appeal, it is hardly surprising that Texas Hold 'Em has single-handedly revitalized the world of poker all over the planet. Since the advent of the poker variant's rapid rise to popularity, countless tournaments have been sprouting everywhere and droves and droves of players are getting into the Texas Hold 'Em bandwagon.

If you are one of such players who intends to enter the world of Texas Hold 'Em, then here are some heads-up that can help you understand the mechanics and the underlying concepts of the poker variant that you are about to play.

Basically speaking, Texas Hold 'Em can be easily described as a variant of the other popular poker variant that is seven-card stud. At the onset of a session, two cards will be dealt faced-down to each of the players at the table. After these two cards are dealt to each of the player, a round of betting will then commence.

This round of betting will start with a forced bet by the two players seated to the left of the dealer. Such players will be referred to as the big blind and the small blind and this distinction of starting the pot with the first bets will rotate clockwise.

After this round of betting, the dealer will then deal three faced-up cards. Also referred to as the flop, these cards that will serve as the first batch of community cards for all the players to use and combine with their own cards to achieve the game's goal of being the one who has the best hand at the table. After the flop has been dealt, another round of betting will again commence. In such rounds of betting, a player can choose among these actions: the player can call, raise, or fold. A fourth option - checking, can only be done if one is the first to bet or if all the players prior to one's turn have checked.

After the round of betting, the fourth community card is revealed. Typically, this is the phase where most players fold but experts say that it is best to fold after the flop has been dealt as the cards that one aims for are unlikely to come up on the later phases of the game. Once the round of betting concludes, the final community card is revealed. This is followed by the final round of betting which is in turn followed by the showdown where the hands that are still in the pot are finally revealed.

As one can see, the rules of the popular poker variant that is Texas Hold 'Em is far from being complex. One only has to learn these rules and some practice and one is already set to begin one's journey into the world of Texas Hold 'Em poker.
