Instructions for Poker: How to Play Five-Card Draw
Apart from the seemingly default variant of everyone that is Texas Hold 'Em, poker players should take some effort to know the other variants that their favorite card game offers. With the richness of the card game in terms of the number of variants that it has, it would be really a shame to confines one's self in one variant only.
It is for this reason why poker players should acquaint themselves with poker variants such as five-card draw. Though not being a high-profile variant like Texas Hold 'Em with all of its casino and tournament presence, the five-card draw variant is a good incarnation of poker as it embodies the essential qualities of the card game in a simple manner thereby giving it universal appeal.
A typical session of five-card draw begins with an ante and followed by five cards being dealt faced-down to each player. Beginning with the player seated immediately to the left of the dealer, each player at the poker table will then have the option to either check, bet, or raise. In order for a player to open, the player is required to have a pair of jacks or better. It is important to remember that some sessions put into place unique rules and as such, players should be able to adapt to such peculiarities. One such common rule is the use of joker cards either as bug or a wild card.
As soon as the first round of betting is finishes, active players at the table starting from the left of the dealer will have the option of discarding one to five cards. For each card discarded, the player will receive a new one from the dealer. After this phase, a new round of betting will again commence. After this last round of betting, the showdown will follow which will be the moment of truth as far as determining the owner of the pot is concerned.
With such simple rules, it would be very much easy for players to get into this variant of poker. Apart from these basic rules that one must know however, are the house rules that vary from session to session and they may prove to be the most challenging part in the process of learning five-card draw. Like the joker rule mentioned above, there are rules such as the one concerning the number of cards that can be replaced and the rule that forbids the use of the bottom card as a replacement.
With this range of special rules, it would be best for players to choose the session that has rules that they are comfortable with so as to ensure that one's experience with the five-card draw will be an enjoyable one.
The five-card draw variant of poker may not reach that many players compared to the numbers reached by variants such as Texas Hold 'Em but there is no excuse for passing up for such a variant that simply embodies everything that makes the game of poker great.
